Virginia Vision Zero Youth Ambassadors Program

AMBASSADOR PROGRAM DETAILS:

The Vision Zero Youth Ambassador Program aims to address the pressing issue of pedestrian safety, focusing on the disproportionate impact on Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) communities in Virginia. The program's goal is to equip BIPOC youth aged 15-29 with the knowledge, skills, and resources needed to combat pedestrian deaths and injuries in their communities.

Ambassadors will participate in a 5-month educational and community engagement experience addressing pedestrian safety. This program harnesses the power of digital storytelling, advocacy, and community engagement to design interventions that prioritize pedestrian safety.

This is a paid opportunity. During their program, participants will be expected to:

  • Contribute 5hrs/per month, minimum, to attending monthly virtual online cohort gatherings, one-on-one development meetings, and mentorship sessions. Required sessions can be found here.

  • Create, lead, and engage in interventions (advocacy, infrastructure, community mobilization) throughout the ambassador period

  • Participate in NOYS engagements as assigned

  • Serve as a youth ambassadors for mobility/transportation safety

  • Attend and participate in the end of program event

Participants will receive a stipend of $300 as well as seed intervention funding for their participation in the program. Stipends are not grant-funded.

The Vision Zero Youth Ambassadors Program  is a competitive program that will select a small group of candidates to join the program in the following locations: 

  • Arlington County

  • Fairfax County

  • Henrico County

  • Norfolk City

  • Richmond City

  • Virginia Beach City

A successful applicant should:

  • Identify as a person from within the Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) community

  • Be between the ages of 15-29 as of September 1, 2023

  • Have demonstrated experience in one or more of the following:

    • Social or political activism, community organizing, and/or partnership or work with a nonprofit community organization

    • Entrepreneurship and/or participation in a start-up

  • Have knowledge, expertise, and passion for transportation and health issues.

  • Demonstrate good public speaking and presentation skills
