- In the United States, 5,748 human trafficking cases were reported to the National Human Trafficking hotline this year. There were 20,424 calls.
- An estimated 5.5 million children and youth are trafficked around the world each year. They are exploited and abused for prostitution, pornography, and sex tourism; forced marriage; sweatshop work; migrant farming; militias; and other forms of abuse.
- One in six endangered runaways reported to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) in 2016 were likely sex trafficking victims. 86% of these likely sex trafficking victims were in the care of social services or foster care when they went missing.
- Department of Justice-funded research has begun to track trafficking within the United States and has uncovered effective techniques for both finding victims and improving law enforcement responses to these victims.
