Maryland’s largest district is the latest to consider opening a special campus, prompted by increasing concerns about substance abuse and addiction among students.

Nationally, many recovery schools enroll a small number of students at any given time, with an average cost of $12,000 to $20,000 per student. Critics say more rigorous research is needed on recovery schools and question the cost-effectiveness compared to interventions in regular high schools.
