An innovative approach to teen distracted driving education is the subject of a new evaluation by a team at University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore.

The novel “Get the Message” program includes a tour of a hospital trauma center and testimony from a trauma survivor, in addition to teaching about different types of distracted driving (visual, manual, and cognitive) and special risks faced by inexperienced drivers.

Published in the Journal of Trauma Nursing, the evaluation found that the program positively influenced driving behaviors of the 900 teen participants, by “increasing perceived threat and providing a social context in which teens could interact and learn.”
