Alcohol, tobacco, and other drug use among our nation’s youth remains a major public health problem. Experimentation with tobacco, alcohol, and drugs during adolescence is common; however, teenagers and youth in their early 20’s often don’t see the link between their actions and their potential consequences. They have a tendency to feel indestructible and immune to the problems that others experience as a result of substance use and abuse (American Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry, 2013). Substance abuse can increase the risk for injury, violence, unplanned and unsafe sex, and suicide (www.cdc.gov).
